The Latest (but hardly new) Assault on Women

I don't know what's making me so particularly interested in feminist issues lately.  Well, yes I do: I'm female, and I have experienced nearly every benefit and drawback of being a woman in modern America.  Yes!  Free drinks, rides home, doors opened!  No!  Taken less seriously professionally, being scrutinized for personal choices, being called a bitch for behavior for which men are respected, even applauded!

But hats (heels) off to Debrahlee Lorenzana, who's catching everyone's shit in a big way.  This exact scenario happened to a friend of mine a few years ago (also in finance, hmm) - hotter than her coworkers, she gets blamed for her coworkers' reactions.  At first you're like, yeah, to have such problems... but it runs both ways.
Women who don't measure up to whatever the current standard of beauty is get screwed professionally too, and not in the good way.  The whole point is for women to be judged by their work performance, period... and you know there is no way a man would be asked to wear a less-fitted shirt or wear his hair a different way because his female colleagues were distracted by his irresistible beauty.

Don't miss this article.

I like that the commenters on Jezebel point out that whether this woman had poor job performance or said asshole things about her coworkers or other women is irrelevant.  Akin to the "she wanted to get raped" bullshit defense, it's the job of her managers and coworkers to behave appropriately so no lawsuit could be justifiably brought in the first place.

Winningest comment: I am so sick of men (and many women) acting as if the penis reacts independently from the man attached. It's as if we all think that men are victims of their own sex drive while women are expected to allow themselves to be sexualized and to do so at a time convenient to the male gaze. Why the hell can´t we just behave like adults and dress like adults and if a woman happens to look great in a suit because of her curves, but the suit itself would be considered appropriate attire for for the general population to wear (a ´conservative suit´will still reveal a curvy body -- for some women, there is nothing one can do) then it really is the problem of the man who is distracted. Why the hell isn´t the distracted male being reprimanded for a poor job performance?
